Not all jellyfish are equal: isotopic evidence for inter- and intraspecific variation in jellyfish trophic ecology [PDF]
Jellyfish are highly topical within studies of pelagic food-webs and there is a growing realisation that their role is more complex than once thought.

Cytotoxic effect on human keratinocytes of crude extracts from planktonic Cnidaria
Biotoxin production is a characterizing aspect of the physiology and ecology of several marine organisms. In this study the cytotoxic effect of crude extracts from jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca, Chrysaora hysoscella and Aurelia aurita (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa)

Our study looks at the association between microRNA expression and disease resistance in Caribbean staghorn corals infected with White Band Disease. We find three microRNAs differentially expressed due to disease resistance with putative targets involved in innate immunity.

Aurelia aurita bell kinematics.
(A) Aurelia aurita bell kinematics showing the exumbrella profiles over a full swimming cycle. The exumbrella profiles shown were selected arbitrarily for clarity. The margin trajectories are also shown for each side of the exumbrella profile.

Physicochemical and Biotechnological Properties of Marine Collagen Materials
As the current agricultural production capacity fails to meet the growing demand for meat products, the global market might soon face meat shortages. Cultured, or cultivated, meat is a prospective solution to protein security challenges.

Hypoxia threatens coral and sea anemone early life stages
Abstract Seawater hypoxia is increasing globally and can drive declines in organismal performance across a wide range of marine taxa. However, the effects of hypoxia on early life stages (e.g., larvae and juveniles) are largely unknown, and it is unclear how evolutionary and life histories may influence these outcomes.

The cytochrome P450 (CYP) superfamily in cnidarians
The cytochrome P450 (CYP) superfamily is a diverse and important enzyme family, playing a central role in chemical defense and in synthesis and metabolism of major biological signaling molecules.

Feeding rates of the jellyfish Aurelia aurita on fish larvae
We quantified feeding rates of field caught Aurelia aurita feeding on yolk sac cod (Gadus morhua) larvae in a series of incubation experiments. A short-time (similar to 1 h) functional response experiment with a wide range of prey concentrations (0.5-16 ...
