Lattice defects are introduced into stable austenite (β) by hot rolling up to 70% (in one pass) in a temperature range between 900 > TAF > 340 °C (ausforming (AF)). The changes in microstructure, thermal transformation behavior, as well as normal and anomalous properties in stress-, strain-, and temperature-space were studied.

High-strength of modified Ausform 9CrODS steels
Journal of Nuclear Materials, 2011Abstract Hot-rolling at the austenitic γ phase (1000 °C) led to a formation of ultra-fine grains and a high dislocation density within grain interiors by an Ausform process. Those heavily accumulated strains accelerated coarsening of prior austenite grains, and block grains transformed from the coarsened prior austenite grains were also coarser in ...

Variant selection of lenticular martensite by ausforming
Scripta Materialia, 2012The variant selection of lenticular martensite transformed from austenite in an Fe–25Ni–0.5C alloy uniaxially compressed at 973 K was investigated quantitatively. It was found that four variants with habit planes closely parallel to the compression plane were favorably formed.

Nitrogen and Ausforming to Improve Stainless Martensitic Steels
steel research international, 2014The chromium content of standard martensitic stainless steel X65Cr14 is raised to 17 mass% to enhance the solubility of nitrogen. Up to 4 mass% of nickel are added to suppress a partially ferritic solidification. This combination increases the nitrogen content soluble at 1 bar pressure from 0.14 to 0.24 mass%, which allows to reduce the carbon content ...

Ausforming of austempered ductile iron alloyed with nickel
International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 2006Abstract The unique properties of austempered ductile iron (ADI) are related to the ausferrite matrix (stable high carbon austenite with fine acicular ferrite) formed during the austempering treatment of ductile iron castings. Ausforming of ADI adds a mechanical processing component to the conventional ADI heat treatment, thus increasing the rate of ...

Finite Element Simulation of Ausforming of Austempered Ductile Iron Components
Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 2000The mechanical properties of ductile iron can be improved by ausforming, that is, applying work during austempering. The resulting yield strength and ductility are comparable to those of SAE 4140 steel, while the density is approximately 10 percent less.

Application of Ausforming Techniques to Track Shoes
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1968<div class="htmlview paragraph">Sections approximately the size and shape of the load bearing portions of a standard track shoe for military track laying vehicles have been produced by an ausforging process. These sections were ausforged from H-11 consumable vacuum melt, H-11 conventional melt, and SAE 4340 conventional melt steel.

Quantitative analysis of variant selection in ausformed lath martensite
Acta Materialia, 2012Abstract Variant selection in lath martensite transformed from deformed austenite in a low-carbon low-alloy steel is examined quantitatively on the basis of electron backscatter diffraction analysis of martensite, in concert with a novel method for the reconstruction of austenite orientation.

Abnormal Anisotropic Dilatation During Bainitic Transformation of Ausformed Austenite
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2018There is significant anisotropic dilatation during bainitic transformation from plastically deformed austenite in a structurally and chemically homogenous alloy with no externally applied stress. The abnormal dilatation was found to be due to pronounced variant selection in a specific-textured austenite based on electron backscatter diffraction ...

Properties of ausformed austempered ductile iron (AADI) containing Ni
International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 2005AbstractThe abrasion wear behaviours of Ausformed Austempered Ductile Iron (AADI) and conventional Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) were investigated. The effects of both Ni content and rolling reduction during the ausforming process on the wear resistance of AADI and ADI were studied.
