How cold is too cold? A theoretical analysis of the optimal trigger for index insurance for frost damage to crops

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Crop insurance is undoubtedly an extremely valuable element in protecting agricultural businesses, but in many cases standard indemnity‐based products have had very low uptake due to high transaction costs elevating premiums to unaffordable levels.

Climatology and spectral characteristics of 10-day rainfall variability in Manokwari, West Papua (1991–2022) [PDF]

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences
Rainfall variability in the Indo-Pacific warm pool arises from coupled interactions between the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the Asian-Australian monsoon, and large-scale ocean-atmosphere teleconnections.

SST phases and Australian rainfall

open access: yesAustralian Meteorological Magazine, 2001
Two analogue or phase selection methods are regularly examined, but not officially included, in the Seasonal Climate Outlook (SCO) issued by the National Climate Centre; the non-linear Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) analogue developed by Drosdowsky (1994), and the SOI phase system of Stone and Auliciems (1992).

The ENSO-Australian rainfall teleconnection in reanalysis and CMIP5 [PDF]

open access: yesClimate Dynamics, 2014
Australian rainfall is strongly influenced by El Nino-southern oscillation (ENSO). The relationship between ENSO and rainfall in eastern Australia is non-linear; the magnitude of La Nina events has a greater effect on rainfall than does the magnitude of El Nino events, and the cause of the non-linearity is unclear from previous work.
