Automatic Vehicle Location System in Urban Winter Maintenance Operations

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2001
The Virginia Department of Transportation installed Global Positioning System units in 80 trucks operating in two adjacent maintenance areas in the urban area near Washington, D.C. The units report real-time information about the location of the vehicles and their plowing and chemical-spreading activity.

Genetic algorithm approach for locating automatic vehicle identification readers

Proceedings. 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2005., 2005
The paper develops an algorithm for optimally locating surveillance technologies with an emphasis on automatic vehicle identification tag readers by maximizing a travel time reliability objective function. The problem is formulated as a quadratic 0-1 optimization problem where the objective function parameters represent benefit factors that capture ...

Digital map dependent functions of automatic vehicle location systems

IEEE PLANS '88.,Position Location and Navigation Symposium, Record. 'Navigation into the 21st Century'., 2003
A digital map and associated database of a road network are vital for computer-assisted land navigation by automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems. The authors describe the several digital map-dependent functions of these AVL systems. The map-dependent functions detailed are: graphical map representation; initialization of the AVL system; position and

A Loran-C based receiver for automatic vehicle location

36th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference, 1986
A receiver which uses LORAN-C radionavigation signals to compute relative time delays and hence location is described. The receiver interfaces to a two-way mobile radio and uses the existing RF channel to send its received LORAN-C information to a fixed-end computer for further processing including location calculation and display.
