Automaton barriers

Mathematical Notes, 2012
An upper bound for the minimal length of words which can be obtained at the output of an automaton with binary input and output alphabets is improved.

Cache automaton

Proceedings of the 50th Annual IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Microarchitecture, 2017
Finite State Automata are widely used to accelerate pattern matching in many emerging application domains like DNA sequencing and XML parsing. Conventional CPUs and compute-centric accelerators are bottlenecked by memory bandwidth and irregular memory access patterns in automata processing.

Automaton or astronaut?

Acta Astronautica, 1974
Abstract The author confronts the question of whether lunar and planetary exploration and research should be carried out by men or by automatically operated equipment. Soviet and American accomplishments made with automatic devices in the various space programs are reviewed.

The Memetic Automaton

2018
Real-world problems of interest seldom exist in isolation. Thus, we humans routinely resort to exploiting pre-existing ideas, either of our own, and/or those gleaned from others, whenever faced with a never before seen challenge or task. It is these building-blocks of knowledge, that reside in our brains, that were first referred to as “memes” by ...

An automaton analogue of unicellularity

Biosystems, 1979
There is presented in outline form an abstract model of a cell in an evolutionary context. The design is based on an elaboration of John Holland's one-dimensional, abstract universe recently posed for the study of the emergence of self-replicating systems. Eight new ingredients constitute the elaboration.

Automaton models of performance

Journal of Mathematical Psychology, 1973
Abstract This work illustrates the use of a stochastic automaton model for describing the temporal steps taken by a student in solving simple arithmetic prolems. The method provides a hierarchial classification of problems by difficulty expressed in terms of the structural features of the problems.

On glueing states of an automaton

Discrete Mathematics and Applications, 2003
Summary: We consider the problem on glueing states of an automaton which often arises in investigations of adaptive experiments. We give several estimates of time of glueing \(r\) states of an automaton with \(n\) states.

Humans and Automatons

1991
This comment on Julian Hilton’s article discusses two of his examples: the writings of Georg Buchner, and Henrik von Kleist’s On Marionette Theatre. While Hilton finds Buchner’s parallel between people and automatons to be positive and constructive, Florin sees it as helpless and constrained.
