80 DUI-offenders whose aptitude had been judged insufficient after their first aptitude test, underwent a second, higher level test. They were then interviewed about the conduction of these drivers aptitude tests. The test duration of 1-2 hours was considered to be sufficient.

According to the medical regulations for obtaining a driver's license in Sweden, alcohol abuse/dependency constitutes sufficient grounds for denial. In the case of a conviction for gross drunk driving, it is incumbent upon the offender to present a medical certificate verifying a "sober lifestyle".

Several thousand blood samples were taken from alcoholized drivers at the Blood Alcohol Examination Centre of the Institute of legal Medicine at Cologne University. These samples showed blood alcohol contents (BAC) as well as GGT, CDT, methanol, acetone and isopropanol levels which indicated alcohol addiction.
