I consider an autonomous agent to be a physical system able to act on its own behalf, such as a bacterium swimming up a glucose gradient. I tentatively define an autonomous agent to be a system capable of self-reproduction and at least capable of performing one thermodynamic work cycle. I give a hypothetical chemical example.

Autonomous agents for autonomic networks
annals of telecommunications - annales des télécommunications, 2006This paper deals with a multi-agent technology as a tool to introduce an autonomic behavior in network control and management. In a first section, we describe the autonomic communication paradigm, the characteristics, and the need for new architectures. Then, we focus on the differences between a classical and an autonomic network.

Abstract Some Wellspring of creation, lithe in the scattered sunlight of an early planet, whispered something to the gods, who whispered back, and the mystery came alive. Agency was spawned. With it, the nature of the universe changed, for some new union of matter, energy, information, and something more could reach out and manipulate ...

Autonomous Agents addresses the related topics of self-control and individual autonomy. "Self-control" is defined as the opposite of akrasia-weakness of will. The study of self-control seeks to understand the concept of its own terms, followed by an examination of its bearing on one's actions, beliefs, emotions, and personal values.

AbstractExplores the related topics of self‐control and personal autonomy. Self‐control is understood as the contrary of akrasia or weakness of will, and autonomy is placed in the family of metaphysical freedom concepts: most notably, free will, free choice, and free action.

Autonomous Forex Trading Agents
2008In this paper we describe an infrastructure for implementing hybrid intelligent agents with the ability to trade in the Forex Marketwithout requiring human supervision. This infrastructure is composed of three modules. The "Intuition Module", implemented using an Ensemble Model , is responsible for performing pattern recognition and predicting the ...

Allowing autonomous agents freedom
Journal of Medical Ethics, 2008Living-donor kidney transplantation is the “gold standard” treatment for many individuals with end-stage renal failure. Superior outcomes for the graft and the transplant recipient have prompted the implementation of new strategies promoting living-donor kidney transplantation, and the number of such transplants has increased considerably over recent ...

Proceedings. Fourth International Symposium on Autonomous Decentralized Systems. - Integration of Heterogeneous Systems -, 2003
The first question addressed in the paper is "Why and how agent technology supports the design and implementation of Autonomous Decentralised Systems?" Subsequently, based on the main characteristics of the intelligent and mobile agents we assess the specific support agent technology collectively can offer.

The last two years literature witnesses an explosion of contributions on agent systems and technologies. It seems that research and development in this field is hype, papers describe systems which are intelligent, mobile, autonomous and/or any other combination of these attributes.
