Autotrophic Picoplankton in the Tropical Ocean

Science, 1983
In phytoplankton of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean from 25 to 90 percent of the biomass (measured as chlorophyll a ) and 20 to 80 percent of the inorganic carbon fixation were attributable to particles that could pass a screen with a 1-micrometer pore diameter.

A simulation of evolved autotrophic reproduction

Proceedings of the 9th annual conference companion on Genetic and evolutionary computation, 2007
In this experiment we evolve reproductive behaviors for a simulated vehicle. Future work will employ the resulting behaviors to populate a simulated ecosystem.

Autotrophic carbon fixation in archaea

Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2010
The acquisition of cellular carbon from inorganic carbon is a prerequisite for life and marked the transition from the inorganic to the organic world. Recent theories of the origins of life assume that chemo-evolution took place in a hot volcanic flow setting through a transition metal-catalysed, autocatalytic carbon fixation cycle.

Autotrophic Nitrification in Bacteria

1990
Publisher Summary This chapter highlights the physiology of autotrophic ammonia- and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. Several aspects of the physiology of nitrifiers of relevance to their growth and activity in natural environments are considered. The chapter describes the basic features of the biochemistry of ammonia and nitrite oxidation and discusses ...

Semicontinuous cultivation of autotrophic algae

Folia Microbiologica, 1979
Mathematical expressions were derived for the dilution rate and concentration of algae determining the maximum biomass production in a semicontinuous algal culture.

Heterotrophic-Autotrophic Denitrification

2013
A novel heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification (HAD) approach supported by granulated spongy iron, pine bark and mixed bacteria was proposed for remediation of nitrate contaminated groundwater in an aerobic environment. The HAD involves biological deoxygenation, chemical reduction (CR) of nitrate and dissolved oxygen (DO), heterotrophic ...

Nutrients and autotrophs

1992
The inclusion of living components in models of nutrient kinetics changes the nature of these models from the simple systems reviewed in Chapter 2, in which compartments were passive recipients of nutrient molecules and had no control over their rate of input.

Towards the Synthesis of Photo-Autotrophic Protocells

2019
In this contribution we discuss the possible strategies to synthesize photo-autotrophic artificial protocells starting from scratch, following the semi-synthetic bottom up approach. The main aim is to build up artificial compartmentalized systems able to mimic living cell behavior in the transduction of light energy in chemical energy. Some preliminary
