A note on an average run length calculation for the EWMA and other charts
Quality and Reliability Engineering International, 2022AbstractIn the last decade numerous papers have appeared in the statistical process monitoring literature where the in‐control and out‐of‐control average run length (ARL) profiles of the exponentially weighted moving average chart, and some of its variants, have been approximated under the assumption that the signal event can be represented by a ...

The computation of average run length and average time to signal: an overview
Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, 2013Control charts are widely used in industries to monitor a process for quality improvement. Evaluation of the average run length (ARL) or average time to signal (ATS) plays an important role in the design of control charts and performance comparison. In this paper, we review several basic and popular procedures, including the Markov chain and integral ...

A Note on Average Run Lengths of Moving Average Control Charts
Economic Quality Control, 2004Using a counter example, we show that the formula for computing the Average Run Lengths (ARL) of a moving average control chart (MA) in Wetherill and Brown (1991) is incorrect. However, we conjecture that the formula may provide an upper bound for the ARL of a moving average control chart.
