Operational AVHRR navigation results
International Journal of Remote Sensing, 2000A navigation method that combine a precise image deformation model and an automatic adjustment on coastal landmarks is operationally used at the CMS on AVHRR imagery. This paper presents the principles of the method, the error sources and a detailed analysis of the results obtained in 1996-1997 with NOAA-14 and NOAA-12 images.

Precise AVHRR image navigation
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 1994A new AVHRR image navigation software package has been developed. Both direct and indirect image navigation capabilities are provided. An approach is used in which the orbital motion model for the satellite is an independent module. The attitude of the spacecraft is also modeled and the capability to estimate the attitude from ground control points is ...

AVHRR Curation Project - Keeping 40 years of European AVHRR-LAC data
2023The year 2022 was one of the hottest for many regions of the Earth resulting in droughts with shortened vegetation periods, exceptional glacier melt, reduced snow cover, strong warming of lakes, rivers and the Mediterranean Sea and many more considerable anomalies of essential climate variables (ECVs) around the globe.

Remote Sensing of Environment, 1989
Abstract During 1988 the movement of a flood down the Darling River in central eastern Australia was monitored using AVHRR imagery. During the observation period the thermal channels at night gave better contrast between the flood and the surrounding land than the visible and near infrared channels during the day. The slow movement of the flood front

Abstract A simple and fast algorithm for image referencing of the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) data has been derived to facilitate the identification of geographic co-ordinates corresponding to any pixel on an NOAA image and vice versa.

Atmospheric transmittances for the AVHRR channels
Applied Optics, 1989Vertical path atmospheric transmittances from the surface to the top of the atmosphere have been computed for the five channels of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). Gaseous absorption computed from a line-by-line transmittance model and both molecular and aerosol scattering are included.

Filtering cold outliers in SSTs retrieved from early AVHRRs for the second AVHRR GAC reanalysis
Ocean Sensing and Monitoring XIII, 2021Global long-term SST record is being created under the AVHRR GAC Reanalysis (RANs) project, by historical reprocessing 4 km data of the AVHRR/2 and /3 instruments flown onboard multiple NOAA satellites from 1981 – present. The AVHRR data are reprocessed with the NOAA Advanced Clear-Sky Processor for Oceans (ACSPO) system.

NOAA/AVHRR Bidirectional Reflectance
Remote Sensing of Environment, 1999Abstract In this article, bidirectional effects on NOAA/AVHRR short wavelength data were analyzed for the regional monitoring of the temperate pine ( Pinus pinaster ) Landes forest. Because of differences in soil hydrologic characteristics, the forest is described by five ecotypes, which determine the understorey type and the potential for pine ...

CoastWatch operational mapped AVHRR imagery
Proceedings of IGARSS '94 - 1994 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2005A fully operational capability for the mapping of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data was achieved in the fall of 1992. This capability is being used to provide mapped imagery twice daily in near real-time from the AVHRR on the polar-orbiting NOAA-11 satellite.

Compression experiments with AVHRR data
[1991] Proceedings. Data Compression Conference, 2002This paper describes several data compression approaches for producing browse data from AVHRR data, and evaluates these approaches qualitatively and quantitatively. They include a hierarchical data compression scheme based on progressively finer image segmentations, and various vector quantization approaches.
