Proficiency testing of virus diagnostics based on bioinformatics analysis of simulated in silico high-throughput sequencing data sets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Quality management and independent assessment of high-throughput sequencing-based virus diagnostics have not yet been established as a mandatory approach for ensuring comparable results.

Bornaviruses in naturally infected Psittacus erithacus in Portugal: insights of molecular epidemiology and ecology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: The genus Orthobornavirus comprises non-segmented, negative-stranded RNA viruses able to infect humans, mammals, reptiles and various birds. Parrot bornavirus 1 to 8(PaBV-1 to 8) causes neurological and/or gastrointestinal syndromes and death

Development of an in vivo lipopolysaccharide inflammation model to study the pharmacodynamics of COX-2 inhibitors celecoxib, mavacoxib, and meloxicam in cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used frequently in avian medicine for their antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties during surgery and for diseases that cause tissue damage and inflammation.

Genome-wide identification of CBX2 targets: insights in the human sex development network [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
CBX2 (Chromobox homolog 2) is a chromatin modifier that plays an important role in sexual development and its disorders (disorders of sex development, DSD), yet the exact rank and function of human CBX2 in this pathway remains unclear. Here, we performed

Avian bornavirus genotype 4 recovered from naturally infected psittacine birds with proventricular dilatation disease in South Africa

open access: yesJournal of the South African Veterinary Association, 2012
The occurrence of proventricular dilatation disease caused by avian bornavirus (ABV) in captive psittacine birds has long been suspected in South Africa. This report documents the first detection by polymerase chain reaction and gene sequence analyses of ABV from three clinical cases of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) in captive bred blue ...

Low prevalence of Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) IgG antibodies in humans from areas endemic for animal Borna disease of Southern Germany [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Borna disease virus-1 (BoDV-1) was recently discovered as cause of severe and often fatal encephalitis in humans. BoDV-1 is known to cause neurological disease in horses and sheep mainly in South and Central Germany.

A study on the chemical and physical inactivation of Avian bornavirus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Avian bornavirus (ABV) is the etiological agent of Proventricular Dilatation Disease, a fatal neurological disease of pet and aviary kept Psittacine birds (parrots). ABV is believed to be transmitted through the fecal-oral route.

Avian bornavirus infection in waterfowl

open access: yes, 2013
Avian bornavirus (ABV) is a newly recognized cause of neurological disease and mortality in free-ranging geese and swans in Ontario. To determine the correlation between clinical signs, pathological lesions and presence of ABV in tissues of wild waterfowl, 955 pathology cases from Canada geese (Branta canadensis), trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator ...

Detection of a new avian bornavirus in barn owl (Tyto alba) by pan-viral microarray

open access: yesVeterinary Microbiology
A barn owl (Tyto alba) died with neurological signs compatible with a viral infection. After discarding other possible infections caused by circulating viruses in the area, analysis of the central nervous system using a pan-viral microarray revealed hybridization to canary bornavirus 2 (CnBV-2).
