Effects of migratory status and habitat on the prevalence and intensity of infection by haemoparasites in passerines in eastern Spain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The Iberian peninsula is a suitable place to study the effects of migratory condition on the prevalence of blood parasites in avian communities as resident, local populations cohabit with migratory species and with abundant vector populations.

The epidemiology underlying age-related avian malaria infection in a long-lived host: the mute swan Cygnus olor [PDF]

open access: yes
Quantifying the factors that predict parasite outbreak and persistence is a major challenge for both applied and fundamental biology. Key to understanding parasite prevalence and disease outbreaks is determining at what age individuals show signs of ...

Egy összetett szignalizációs mechanizmus: a madárének lokális, regionális és evolúciós mintázatai = Bird song as a multiple functioning sexual signal: patterns on individual, population and regional levels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Tervezett vizsgálataink célja egy komplex, ivarilag szelekctált szignál, a madárének funkcionális kapcsolatrendszereinek felderítése volt. Különböző szinteken, egyedektől a poulációs szinten keresztül a fajok közötti kapcsolatokig vizsgáltuk a szignál ...

Patterns of avian haemosporidia in birds within the greater Cape Town area

open access: yes, 2007
Every species of bird has at least one species of endoparasite or ectoparasite, if not several. Thus it cannot be taken for granted that a particular individual avian species is free from haemosporidian infections. Birds have the richest diversity of intracellular, single cell, protozoan parasites with complicated life cycles, changing between the ...

Presence of Haemosporidia and Flaviviruses in Breeding Prothonotary Warblers (Protonotaria citrea): An Analysis of Spatial and Temporal Trends in Infection Prevalence and Associations with Reproductive Success [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
As Neotropical migratory birds, Prothonotary Warblers are exposed to parasites in both tropical and temperate regions and may act as dispersal agents between geographic areas. This study identifies the prevalence of Haemosporidia, West Nile Virus (WNV),

Detection of avian haemosporidia from captive musophagid birds at a zoological garden in Japan

open access: yesDetection of avian haemosporidia from captive musophagid birds at a zoological garden in Japan
Article One captive musophagid bird at a zoological garden in Japan showed clinical symptoms and was found to be infected with avian haemosporidia. We subsequently collected blood from all musophagid birds kept in the garden and examined for avian haemosporidia using both microscopic and molecular examination.
