Prevalence and Diversity of Haemosporidian-Associated Matryoshka RNA Viruses in a Natural Population of Wild Birds. [PDF]
This study investigated the prevalence and diversity of Matryoshka RNA viruses (MaRNAV) in wild birds in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Using RNA sequencing and RT‐PCR, we identified two novel MaRNAVs (MaRNAV‐5 and ‐6) associated with haemosporidian infections in passerines and raptors. These findings suggest a high prevalence of these viruses,

We investigated for the first time the prevalence of avian haemosporidia of genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon among birds and mosquitoes on Tsushima Island of Japan, which is located between Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Of 55 wild birds belonging to 33 species, 16 (29.1%) tested positive for haemosporidia as follows: Plasmodium spp. (

Reduced Offspring Viability Is Associated With Long-Term Stability of a Narrow Avian Hybrid Zone. [PDF]
We investigated hybrid viability in a tropical, avian hybrid zone governed by strong selection on male secondary sexual traits between the white‐collared manakin (Manacus candei) and golden‐collared manakin (M. vitellinus). We assessed putative hybrid fitness by investigating adult survival and hatching success along with a prospective selective ...

Background Avian haemosporidia are obligate blood parasites with an ample range of hosts worldwide. To understand how host communities may influence the diversity of parasites of the neotropics, the spatial genetic variation of avian Plasmodium ...

Searching for putative avian malaria vectors in a Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest in Brazil [PDF]
Background Haemosporidian parasites of the genera Plasmodium and Haemoproteus can have detrimental effects on individual birds and populations. Despite recent investigations into the distribution and richness of these parasites and their vertebrate hosts,

Complex interactions between bacteria and haemosporidia in coinfected hosts: An experiment
Hosts are typically coinfected by multiple parasite species whose interactions might be synergetic or antagonistic, producing unpredictable physiological and pathological impacts on the host. This study shows the interaction between Plasmodium spp.

Island bird populations and their obligate blood parasites are of interest for understanding the accumulation of biodiversity and the evolutionary relationship with their mainland congeners. We examined avian Haemosporidia cytochrome b gene among terrestrial birds on Gorgona Island National Park, Colombia.

Morphological versus molecular identification of avian Haemosporidia: an exploration of three species concepts [PDF]
More than 200 species of avian Haemosporidia (genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, and Leucocytozoon) have been described based primarily on morphological characters seen in blood smears. Recent molecular studies, however, suggest that such methods may mask a substantial cryptic diversity of avian haemosporidians.

Hurdle in taxonomy: A case of malaria parasites and other Haemosporidia
A crucial progress in taxonomy matches with the growth of various branches of biological sciences. This validates the taxonomic positions of many organisms.

Is it best on the nest? Effects of avian life-history on haemosporidian parasitism
Infectious diseases vary in prevalence and pathology among host species. Species may differ in prevalence of infection due to varying exposure and susceptibility to disease agents throughout their lifetime, which may be attributable to underlying ...
