The Maluridae: Inferring Avian Biology and Evolutionary History from DNA Sequences [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The Australo-Papuan fairy-wrens, emu-wrens and grasswrens comprise the passerine family Maluridae. They have long been known for their spectacular plumages, remarkable behavioural ecology and intriguing biogeography.

The genetic consequences of successful reintroduction of wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) in Nebraska

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue 1, March 2025.
Wild turkeys were nearly extirpated from much of their range, but populations have been successfully restored owing to reintroductions and effective management. Although early taxonomists described five subspecies, their evolutionary relationships have been unclear.

Characterization of the mitogenomes for two sympatric breeding species in Recurvirostridae (Charadriiformes) and their phylogenetic implications

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2017
Recurvirostridae is a family of Charadriiformes that displays an amazing amount of characterization at evolutionary level. The mitogenomes of Himantopus himantopus and Recurvirostra avosetta are 17,378 bp and 16,856 bp in size, respectively.

Mitochondrial Genomes of Domestic Animals Need Scrutiny [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
More than 1000 complete or near-complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences have been deposited in GenBank for eight common domestic animals (i.e. cattle, dog, goat, horse, pig, sheep, yak and chicken) and their close wild ancestors or relatives. Nevertheless, few efforts have been performed to evaluate the sequence data quality, which heavily impact ...

Is There a Key Primer for Amplification of Core Land Plant DNA Barcode Regions (rbcL and matK)?

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 2, February 2025.
We use in silico PCR to select and measure the amplification capability of primer. We tested 366 and 489 published primers for the rbcL and matK regions, respectively, using sequences from 8463 different land plant species. Our results indicate a set of primers that effectively cover all land plant sequences, particularly for the rbcL region.

Interpreting the process behind endemism in China by integrating the phylogeography and ecological niche models of the Stachyridopsis ruficeps. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
An area of endemism (AOE) is a complex expression of the ecological and evolutionary history of a species. Here we aim to address the principal drivers of avian diversification in shaping patterns of endemism in China by integrating genetic, ecological ...

Multi-locus sequence data illuminate demographic drivers of Pleistocene speciation in semi-arid southern Australian birds (Cinclosoma spp.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: During the Pleistocene, shifts of species distributions and their isolation in disjunct refugia led to varied outcomes in how taxa diversified. Some species diverged, others did not.

Mallard Hybridization With Domesticated Lineages Alters Spring Migration Behavior and Timing

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 1, January 2025.
Domesticated‐wild hybridization between game‐farm and wild mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) may impact migratory behavior and fitness. In this study, we analyzed spring migration data from 296 GPS‐tagged mallards in Tennessee and Arkansas, finding that higher levels of game‐farm ancestry were associated with delayed departure and arrival times, shorter ...

The mitogenomes of Gelochelidon nilotica and Sterna hirundo (Charadriiformes, Sternidae) and their phylogenetic implications

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2017
Gelochelidon nilotica and Sterna hirundo are two sympatric breeding species. The mitogenomes of G. nilotica and S. hirundo are 16,748 bp and 16,707 bp in size.

Profound climatic effects on two East Asian black-throated tits (Ave: Aegithalidae), revealed by ecological niche models and phylogeographic analysis. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Although a number of studies have assessed the effects of geological and climatic changes on species distributions in East Asian, we still have limited knowledge of how these changes have impacted avian species in south-western and southern China.
