Trichomonas gallinae is the protozoan that causes avian trichomonosis, a disease affecting the upper digestive tract of birds and leading to proliferative lesions. The 5-nitroimidazoles, especially metronidazole, are the only recommended treatment, but emerging resistance highlights the need for alternatives.
