Inferring potential barriers to gene flow in tropical populations of Avicennia germinans

Aquatic Botany, 2020
Abstract Genetic variation within- and divergence among-populations is essential for conservation and management efforts. In plants that are dispersed mainly by ocean currents, physical features of the landscape may influence rates of gene flow among populations by preventing or facilitating dispersal of buoyant propagules.

Leaf Gall Abundance on Avicennia germinans (Avicenniaceae) along an Interstitial Salinity Gradient1

BIOTROPICA, 2001
ABSTRACTWe investigated the relationships among interstitial salinity, leaf sclerophylly, plant vigor, and population density for the leaf galling insect Cecidomyia avicenniae (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) on its host plant Avicennia germinans (Avicenniaceae).

Development of six microsatellite loci for black mangrove (Avicennia germinans)

Molecular Ecology Notes, 2006
AbstractWe developed six new microsatellite loci for the black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), an important member of wetland communities worldwide. Loci showed moderate to high polymorphism and a survey of four locations [Puerto Rico (Jobos Bay and Luquillo), Mexico, French Guyana] revealed clear regional (and local) population structure.

Untersuchungen zur Salzausscheidung durch die Blätter bei Avicennia germinans (L.) L.

Flora, 1985
Summary Plants of Avicennia germinans were grown at NaCl-concentrations from 0 to 0.3 M in a greenhouse in soil or hydroponic culture. From these plants the anatomy and salt secretion of pilose leaves were compared with those lacking non-glandular hairs on the lower epidermis.

Differential salt deposition and excretion on leaves ofAvicennia germinansmangroves

Caribbean Journal of Science, 2008
Abstract. We examined the control of salt excretion by leaves of the mangrove Avicennia germinans. Endogenously secreted salt on intact leaves was compared to exogenously deposited salt spray on excised leaves. Lower salt excretion was observed on seaward leaves with high salt deposition, and higher salt excretion was found on landward leaves with low ...

Root metabolism in the black mangrove (Avicennia germinans (L.) L): Response to hypoxia

Environmental and Experimental Botany, 1987
Abstract Oxygen concentrations in the roots of Avicennia germinans (L.) L decreased from 16 to less than 2% within 1 hr after exposure to hypoxic conditions and were still low when the experiment was terminated after 96 hr. The intact roots responded metabolically by increasing the capacity for alcoholic fermentation (as indicated by significant ...

The influence of radical architecture on cadmium bioaccumulation in the black mangrove, Avicennia germinans L

Chemosphere, 2007
Two groups of Avicennia germinans plants with differences in the radical architecture were exposed under hydroponic conditions to 95ppm of cadmium (Cd) for a period of 24h. Later, Cd concentration in roots, stems and leaves was determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Drought effects on photosynthesis of the mangrove, Avicennia germinans, under contrasting salinities

Trees, 1999
Drought effects on leaf photosynthesis of A. germinans growing under two contrasting salinities were studied in a Venezuelan fringe mangrove. During both wet and dry seasons, severe chronic-photoinhibition at predawn was not observed but strong down regulation occurred at midday during both seasons.
