Road traffic accidents are the most common cause of avulsion injury, in which spinal roots are torn from the spinal cord. Patients suffer from a loss of sensorimotor function, intractable spontaneous pain, and border-zone hypersensitivity.

A 31 year old male presented with a penetrating oropharyngeal injury following a motor vehicle collision and was found to have a retained metallic foreign body suspected to be part of a vape pen. The foreign body was abutting the carotid artery and was removed via a combined transoral and transcervical approach.

Tibial tuberosity avulsion fracture
