An avulsion fracture is a separation of a small fragment of a bone cortex at the site of a ligament or tendon attachment. It is commonly seen in adolescent athletes. The mechanism of injury is either a sudden violent muscular contraction or an excessive amount of muscle stretch across an open epiphysis.

Avulsion Fractures of the Tibial Tubercle
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1971Seven cases of avulsion fracture of the tibial tubercle are presented. Six of the cases were treated with open reduction and internal fixation. Accurate reduction, adequate fixation, and rehabilitation appear to insure an excellent prognosis.
