Numerical studies on rock breaking of single axe-shaped PDC cutter

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2023
Abstract For a drill bit, the cutter is the most important part to break the rock. In oilwell drilling, polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit is widely used to shear the rock formation. In this paper, a finite element model with including the axe-shaped PDC cutter and rock formation is developed to study the rock breaking behaviours.

A Method for Evaluating the Rock Breaking Efficiency of Cutters and Optimizing the PDC Cutter Profile—A Study of Igneous Rock Formations in Shunbei Oilfield

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
The Permian igneous rock in Shunbei Oilfield exhibits high rock strength, which results in a low rate of penetration (ROP) and shortens the cutter’s service life. It is necessary to analyze and evaluate the rock breaking effect of cutters.

Numerical modeling on drilling fluid and cutter design effect on drilling bit cutter thermal wear and breakdown [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
The unconventional reservoir geological complexity will reduce the drilling bit performance. The drill bit poor performance was the reduction in rate of penetration (ROP) due to bit balling and worn cutter and downhole vibrations that led to ...

Rock Breaking Mechanism and Experimental Study of Axe-shaped PDC Cutter

open access: yesShiyou jixie, 2022
Axe-shaped PDC cutter has more obvious rock breaking advantage than conventional PDC cutter. In order to analyze the rock breaking mechanism of the axe-shaped PDC cutter, the finite element simulation and test were used to conduct comparison and force ...

Experimental Study on Rock Breaking Effect of Axe-Shaped and Triangular-Ridged Cutters Under Impact Load

open access: yesShiyou jixie
In drilling engineering, optimized cutter selection for specific formations is critical to enhance rock breaking efficiency. To this end, a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus was used to conduct impact-induced rock breaking tests of triangular-
