Each year, thousands of cardiac patients await healthy donor hearts for transplantation. Due to the current shortage of donor hearts (approximately 2300 per year), these patients often require supplemental circulatory support until a transplant becomes available. This supplemental support is often provided by a mechanical heart pump or left ventricular

AXIAL FLOW PUMP-ENERGIZED ARTIFICIAL HEART
1983Publisher Summary This chapter describes a new type artificial heart pump that uses a unidirectional rotating impeller and variable pitch blades that will eventually be driven by two D.C. brushless motors. The system will be powered by an external electrical coil that energizes an implantable secondary coil.

CONE FLOW AND AXIAL FLOW PUMPS
1993This chapter describes cone flow and axial flow pumps. For low heads up to about 40 m per stage and for type numbers above about 3000, cone flow and axial flow pumps may be used. In general, these pumps have vertical spindles and are arranged to draw water directly from a well or sump, for example, mixed flow pump.

NPSHr Optimization of Axial-Flow Pumps
Journal of Fluids Engineering, 2008The two-step method for optimizing net positive suction head required (NPSHr) of axial-flow pumps is proposed in this paper. First, the NPSHr at the impeller tip is optimized with impeller diameter based on experimental data of 2D cascades in available wind tunnels.

The Design of Axial Flow Pumps
Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1956Abstract A design procedure for axial-flow pump impellers is presented that accounts for induced interference effects in the prediction of performance. Induced interference velocities at an impeller blade have been calculated using a three-dimensional model that includes the effects of the other blades and of the total downstream ...

Shaft Failure of Large Axial Flow Pumps
Journal of the Power Division, 1976Failure of shafts driving large axial flow pumps was found to be caused by intake flow pattern. Extensive tests on prototype pump and laboratory model were used to identify and correct the problem. Strains measured on the shaft during pump operation showed the existence of a cyclic bending moment sufficiently large to cause a fatigue failure.

[The design of axial flow pump].
Sheng wu yi xue gong cheng xue za zhi = Journal of biomedical engineering = Shengwu yixue gongchengxue zazhi, 2002Axial flow pump has been the hot point of the research field of circulatory support. This article has outlined the basic principle of its design and the methodology of its experimental study, and explained that excellent engineer design, avoiding turbulence, cavitation and wake, and reducing the destroy of red blood cells were the goal to get in design

Fluid dynamics aspects of miniaturized axial-flow blood pump
Bio-Medical Materials and Engineering, 2014Rotary blood pump (RBP) is a kind of crucial ventricular assist device (VAD) and its advantages have been evidenced and acknowledged in recent years. Among the factors that influence the operation performance and the durability of various rotary blood pumps, medium property and the flow features in pump's flow passages are conceivably significant.

Mechanical axial flow blood pump to support cavopulmonary circulation
The International Journal of Artificial Organs, 2008We are developing a collapsible, percutaneously inserted, axial flow blood pump to support the cavopulmonary circulation in infants with a failing single ventricle physiology. An initial design of the impeller for this axial flow blood pump was performed using computational fluid dynamics analysis, including pressure-flow characteristics, scalar ...

Axial-flow polymer bridge pump with hydrodynamic bearings
Journal of Artificial OrgansA portable axial-flow polymer bridge pump with hydrodynamic bearings has been developed for bridge-to-bridge use. The pump is inexpensive to manufacture and disposable. It weighs 185 g and was verified to have a lifetime of 3 months with silent operation.
