Circulation near Axial Seamount

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1990
Year‐long moored current measurements from 1987 to 1988 on the saddle (1860 m) between Axial Volcano and Brown Bear Seamount show an oscillating flow with a broadband frequency centered at about 4 days and a long‐term average flow of about 4 cm/s southward.

Porosity of the upper edifice of Axial Seamount

Geology, 2007
Seamounts are not solid basalt structures, but have relatively high porosities in their upper crustal sections. At Axial Seamount, off the coast of Oregon, United States, we used on-bottom gravity measurements with a Bell gravity meter within deep-sea submersible Alvin to determine a porosity of 31% for the uppermost ∼100 m of the edifice.

Combined acoustical and seismic studies of Axial Seamount

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2021
The NSF Ocean Observatories Initiatives Regional Cabled Array at Axial Seamount provides a remarkable facility for sustained studies of an active submarine volcano. A local seismic network supports a real-time earthquake catalog and hydrophones monitor sounds in the water column.
