Abstract This paper deals with the transverse vibration of an initially stressed moving viscoelastic string obeying a fractional differentiation constitutive law. The governing equation is derived from Newtonian second law of motion, and reduced to a set of non-linear differential–integral equations based on Galerkin's truncation.

Nonlinear Parametric Resonance of a Fractional Damped Axially Moving String
Nonlinear parametric vibration of an axially accelerating viscoelastic string is investigated. The string is constituted by the fractional Kelvin model. The principal parametric resonance is analyzed by using an asymptotic approach.

Stability of an Axially Accelerating String Subjected to Frictional Guiding-Forces
World Tribology Congress III, Volume 1, 2005The dynamic response of an axially translating continuum subjected to the combined effects of a pair of spring supported frictional guides and axial acceleration is investigated; such systems are both non-conservative and gyroscopic. The continuum is modeled as a tensioned string translating between two rigid supports with a time dependent velocity ...

Friction Induced Transverse Vibrations of an Axially Accelerating String
Contact Mechanics, 2003The purpose of this study is to investigate the dynamic response of axially translating continua undergoing both the effect of friction and axial acceleration. The axially moving continuum is initially modeled as a string, neglecting its flexural stiffness; the response, with particular interest given to transverse vibrations and dynamic stability, is ...

VIBRATION OF AN AXIALLY MOVING STRING WITH GEOMETRIC NON-LINEARITY AND TRANSLATING ACCELERATION
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2001Summary: The vibration of an axially moving string is studied when the string has geometric non-linearity and translating acceleration. Based upon the von Karman strain theory, the equations of motion are derived considering the longitudinal and transverse deflections.

Iterative algorithm for axially accelerating strings with integral constitutive law
Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica, 2008A numerical method is proposed to simulate the transverse vibrations of a viscoelastic moving string constituted by an integral law. In the numerical computation, the Galerkin method based on the Hermite functions is applied to discretize the state variables, and the Runge-Kutta method is applied to solve the resulting differential-integral equation ...

Velocity tracking control of an axially accelerating string and actuator system
Proceedings of the 38th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. No.99CH36304), 2003We present a control strategy for an axially moving string system that achieves vibration regulation along the string and ensures that the string tracks a desired axial velocity trajectory. The control strategy is implemented by utilizing the roller torque inputs applied at the entry and exit points of the string and a pair of control forces applied to

LIE GROUP THEORY AND ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE AXIALLY ACCELERATING STRING PROBLEM
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2000Abstract Transverse vibrations of a string moving with time-dependent velocity v (t) have been investigated. Analytical solutions of the problem are found using the systematic approach of Lie group theory. Group classification with respect to the arbitrary velocity function has been performed using a newly developed technique of equivalence ...

Principal Parametric Resonance of Axially Accelerating Viscoelastic Strings
Volume 6: 5th International Conference on Multibody Systems, Nonlinear Dynamics, and Control, Parts A, B, and C, 2005The steady-state transverse responses and the stability of an axially accelerating viscoelastic string are investigated. The governing equation is derived from the Eulerian equation of motion of a continuum, which leads to the Mote model for transverse motion. The Kirchhoff model is derived from the Mote model by replacing the tension with the averaged
