Most breast cancer patients with a clinically clear axilla should receive sentinel node biopsy, irrespective of whether they are scheduled for breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy; the principal exception is patients with T4 disease. If the sentinel node is negative, no further axillary treatment is necessary.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the symptoms of swelling in axilla. Swelling in the axilla in the great majority of cases is as a result of enlargement of the lymphatic nodes. If the enlargement is inflammatory, a subsequent abscess, either acute or chronic, is frequent.
