Lecture Notes in Mechanical Engineering, 2021The local 3D cylindrical axisymmetry of a vortex is examined. Simple scalar quantities with a clear geometrical interpretation are introduced as suitable analytical tools for visualization of the local axisymmetry and skewness of the flow in the domain characterized by complex eigenvalues of the velocity-gradient tensor.

A measure of axisymmetry for vortex rings [PDF]
Abstract There are many conditions in which a vortex ring deviates from axisymmetry. The shape of a three dimensional vortex ring represents the axisymmetry of propulsion, which has applications in animal locomotion (e.g., the free-swimming of a jellyfish), rocket and marine propulsion devices as well as blood flow through the heart valves.

Departure from Axisymmetry in Planetary Nebulae
Many planetary nebulae (PNe) exhibit distinctly non-axisymmetric structure in either (i) the shape of the nebula, or (ii) in the off-centered position of the illuminating star. By examining a large number of well resolved images of PNe we estimate that about 30-50 percents of all PNe exhibit distinctly non-axisymmetric structure.
