The effect of manganese on grain refinement of a commercial AZ31 alloy has been investigated using an Al-60%Mn master alloy splatter as an alloying additive at 730 °C in aluminium titanite crucibles. It is shown that grain refinement by manganese is readily achievable in AZ31.

Tube extrusion of AZ31 alloy with Sr additions

Abstract Three Mg alloys (AZ31, and AZ31 + 0.4 and 0.8 wt%Sr) were successfully hot extruded into tubes at 400 °C through a porthole die. Strontium (Sr) additions to AZ31 alloy reduced twining and the dynamically recrystallized grain size. However, Sr also increased the surface cracking tendency during extrusion.

Strain-hardening behaviour of AZ31 magnesium alloys

Abstract The in-plane tensile behaviour of rolled sheets of the magnesium alloy AZ31 was investigated in both an H24 state and an aged state. Whereas the very high initial strain-hardening rate decreases monotonically with strain for the H24 samples, the annealed structure exhibits a striking increase in the strain-hardening rate.
