Dynamic Precipitation during High‐Pressure Torsion of a Magnesium–Manganese Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 28, Issue 4, 18 February 2026.
An ultrafine‐grained alloy is produced by high‐pressure torsion of solutionized Mg–1.35 wt% Mn. Precipitation of nanometer‐scale Mn particles during deformation provides pinning sites. This prevents the formation of a bimodal grain structure and results in a finer grain size than for pure Mg.

Comparative study of dynamic recrystallization behavior, microstructural characteristics, and mechanical properties of high-speed-extruded AZ31 and BA56 magnesium alloys

open access: yesJournal of Magnesium and Alloys
This study compares the microstructural evolution, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior, tensile properties, and age-hardenability between the newly developed high-speed-extrudable BA56 alloy and those of the widely recognized AZ31 alloy in industry.

Cold-Rolling Effect on Low-Frequency Damping Properties of AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Plate at Moderately High Temperature [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Metallurgy and Materials
This study investigated the influence of cold-rolling on the damping capacity of the hot-extruded AZ31 alloy plate. The damping capacity of the hot-extruded and the cold-rolled AZ31 alloy plates were measured by a dynamic mechanical analysis with a ...

Fretting wear in AZ31 magnesium alloy

open access: yesTransactions of the JSME (in Japanese), 2016
Fretting wear in magnesium alloy AZ31 was investigated in order to understand the fundamental tribological properties in magnesium alloy. Ball on disc type fretting test was conducted, in which the cyclic tangential force was applied by rotating a gear pear with the weight.

Loading Mode Dependence of Twin‐Twin Boundary Formation in a Textured Magnesium Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 13, Issue 4, 17 February 2026.
The structures of twin‐twin boundaries formed by interactions between twin variants sharing the same or different zone axes in a deformed magnesium alloy are demonstrated. Lattice distortion around complicated interfaces promotes grain refinement in the subsequent thermomechanical process, enhancing the mechanical performance of magnesium alloys ...

Deformation modes and anisotropy in magnesium alloy AZ31 [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Materials Research, 2009
Abstract A strongly textured sheet of magnesium alloy AZ31 has been subjected to tensile testing at temperatures between ambient and 300 °C. Structures have been examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy and also by atomic force microscopy to quantify surface displacements seen at grain boundaries.

Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Sheets Prepared by Low-Speed Extrusion with Different Temperature

open access: yesCrystals, 2020
AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets were prepared by low-speed extrusion at different temperatures, i.e., 350 °C, 400 °C, and 450 °C. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of extruded AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets were studied.

Designing High‐Strength and High‐Ductility Cast Mg–Zn–Al–Mn–Sn Alloys via τ‐Mg32(Al,Zn)49 Phase Tuning and Twin Boundary Toughening Optimisation

open access: yesRare Metals, Volume 45, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Achieving a simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility remains a critical bottleneck for the large‐scale and cost‐effective engineering application of magnesium alloys. In this work, guided by first‐principles calculations, we tailored the τ‐Mg32(Al,Zn)49 phase and optimised twin boundary, thereby designing and successfully ...
