The Azores form an archipelago 480 km long, of volcanic islands rising from a submarine ridge. The nearest island to Europe is about 1500 km from Gibraltar, 1250 from Cabo da Roca in Portugal and about 1900 from the English Channel; from the westernmost island it is about 1750 km to Newfoundland.
