Understory plant species recruitment and expansion spur community shifts following forest restoration treatments

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Restoration treatments have been implemented in many of the dry conifer forests of the western United States. By decreasing forest density and increasing forest heterogeneity, these treatments are generally effective at meeting their primary objective of reducing the risk of uncharacteristically severe wildfire.

Assessing the topographic distribution of legacy soil phosphorus in agricultural fields of the Delmarva Peninsula, Mid‐Atlantic Coastal Plain, USA

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Quality, Volume 55, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Abstract Phosphorus (P) management remains a challenge in agricultural watersheds. The Choptank River Conservation Effects Assessment Project watershed, located in Maryland and Delaware and draining to the Chesapeake Bay, contains legacy soil P from historical dairy and poultry manure applications.

Identifying a science‐based methodology for generating refined maps that identify where pesticides overlap with endangered/threatened species habitat

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Quality, Volume 55, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Abstract To manage pests, including problematic weeds, farmers rely on an integrated pest management approach that encourages the safe and effective use of pesticides. As US federal regulators place restrictions on pesticides as a means of protecting endangered and threatened (known collectively as listed) species, it is paramount these decisions are ...

Saturated buffer performance under alternative weir settings: Implications for design and management

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Quality, Volume 55, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Abstract Saturated buffers are important edge‐of‐field conservation practices to reduce nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3‐N) loading from subsurface (tile) drainage systems to downstream waters. The impact of seasonal management of weir elevations in the water control structure on NO3‐N removal has not been well studied.
