Late‐Arriving Multilingual Learners' Transition from K–16 Education to the Workforce: Cultural Capital and Habitus Adaptation across Fields

open access: yesTESOL Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract English learners (ELs) in US K–12 schools face systemic barriers that constrain their college and career readiness. Although research has richly documented ELs' limited opportunities to learn in high school and barriers to postsecondary education, much less is known about how late‐arriving ELs move from high school to community college (CC ...

Contrastive ecoacoustic indices: Large‐scale global soundscape characterization with contrastive inference

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Ecoacoustics mainly aims at monitoring soundscapes by means of non‐invasive protocols. Despite the widespread adoption of machine and deep learning techniques, existing ecoacoustic models predominantly rely on supervised learning and, consequently, face two primary limitations: (1) the necessity of annotated data; and (2) the restriction to ...

Metabarcoding replicate detection frequency tracks ddPCR copy number for cod and herring eDNA in ancient marine sediments

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Detecting environmental DNA (eDNA) from rare or low‐abundance aquatic species remains a major challenge, particularly when it is highly degraded, present at low concentrations, and dominated by DNA from non‐target taxa. These challenges are further amplified in sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) studies, where thousands of years can degrade ...

Phylogenetic and ecological duality in the otoliths of Sciaenidae

open access: yesCladistics, EarlyView.
Abstract Teleost fishes have evolved taxon‐specific otoliths that vary greatly in size and shape and are primarily involved in hearing and balance. This study identifies the main drivers of otolith shape disparity in Sciaenidae, a clade of sound‐producing bony fishes, using three‐dimensional geometric morphometrics (3DGM).
