Only recently has it been recognized that hemotropic animal parasites of the genus babesia are also human pathogens. Similar to malaria in both symptoms and laboratory findings, acute babesiosis generally results in self-limited illness, but it can be fatal in the asplenic patient.

Chemoprophylaxis (Imidocarb) Against Babesia bigemina and Babesia argentina Infections
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1973SUMMARY The chemoprophylactic effects of imidocarb 3,3′-bis-(2-imidazolin-2-yl)-carbanilide dihydrochloride) against bovine babesiasis were evaluated in 29 calves. The compound had prophylactic and therapeutic properties in calves artificially and naturally infected with Babesia bigemina and Babesia argentina of Colombian South American) origin ...

Veterinary Parasitology, 2006
The history of the genus Babesia is briefly outlined. The classical differences with the main other genus of non-pigment-forming hemoparasites, Theileria, are the absence of extra-erythrocytic multiplication (schizogony) in Babesia and the cycle in the vector tick, which includes transovarial transmission in Babesia but only transstadial transmission ...

Babesia hylomysci and Babesia microti: Dexamethasone treatment of infected mice
Experimental Parasitology, 1984The effect of dexamethasone on Babesia hylomysci and B. microti was investigated in LACA mice. The drug enhanced both infections by depressing the immune mechanisms of the host when treatment was initiated before parasite inoculation, but had no effects on established and subpatent infections.

Antigenic Variation in Babesia
1977As babesiosis has been the subject of several recent reviews (Mahoney 1972; Riek 1968; Ristic 1970) and is the subject of another chapter in this volume (Callow, Chapter 8), I will only briefly present the evidence now available to show that antigenic variation also occurs in this disease.

Babesia microti and Babesia hylomysci: Spleen and phagocytosis in infected mice
Experimental Parasitology, 1979The role of the spleen during Babesia microti and B. hylomysci infection was investigated by examining the course of infection in both intact and splenectomized mice. The presence of the spleen was critical during the early stages of infection to control excessive multiplication of either parasite, a role taken over by other lymphoid sites as the ...
