Babesia hylomysci and Babesia microti: Dexamethasone treatment of infected mice

Experimental Parasitology, 1984
The effect of dexamethasone on Babesia hylomysci and B. microti was investigated in LACA mice. The drug enhanced both infections by depressing the immune mechanisms of the host when treatment was initiated before parasite inoculation, but had no effects on established and subpatent infections.

Atovaquone in the Treatment of Babesia microti Infections in Hamsters

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1996
The traditional therapy for the treatment of human Babesia microti infections has been the combination of clindamycin and quinine. However, in recent years, it has become apparent that some patients have not responded to this regimen. We became involved in the treatment of several cases of babesiosis in which atovaquone was used to treat this infection.

Genotypic status of Babesia microti within the piroplasms

Parasitology Research, 2000
For resolution of the controversial taxonomic status of Babesia microti in relation to other Babesia and Theileria spp. a phylogenetic analysis of an American and a German B. microti strain was performed on the basis of sequences of the small-subunit rRNA gene (rDNA) using distance-matrix, maximum-parsimony, and maximum-likelihood algorithms.

Babesia microti and Babesia hylomysci: Spleen and phagocytosis in infected mice

Experimental Parasitology, 1979
The role of the spleen during Babesia microti and B. hylomysci infection was investigated by examining the course of infection in both intact and splenectomized mice. The presence of the spleen was critical during the early stages of infection to control excessive multiplication of either parasite, a role taken over by other lymphoid sites as the ...
