The production of bacanora mezcal (Sonora). Heritage enhancement and cultural challenges [PDF]

open access: green, 2022

Thriving in Adversity: Yeasts in the Agave Fermentation Environment. [PDF]

open access: yesYeast
Three key players interacting in the agave fermentation environment: humans, agave plants, and microbes. Human selection of agaves with specific traits, combined with fermentation practices, may have created an environment that fosters the development of adaptive traits in certain microbial species, enabling them to thrive in the unique and challenging

Speciation along a latitudinal gradient: The origin of the Neotropical cycad sister pair Dioon sonorense-D. vovidesii (Zamiaceae). [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2021
We reconstructed the history of lineage divergence that gave origin to the sister cycad species Dioon sonorense–D. vovidesii from northwestern Mexico. We found that the two lineages split approximately 1 million years ago, and their current geographic separation is concordant with the environmental seasonality variation associated with the latitudinal ...

Interaction of planting system with radiation-use efficiency in wheat lines. [PDF]

open access: yesCrop Sci
Abstract Radiation‐use efficiency (RUE) is an important trait for raising biomass and yield potential in plant breeding. However, the effect of the planting system (PS) on genetic variation in RUE has not been previously investigated. Our objectives were to quantify genetic variation in RUE, biomass and grain yield in raised‐bed and flat‐basin planting

Microbial Communities in Agave Fermentations Vary by Local Biogeographic Regions. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol Rep
We performed a country‐wide metabarcoding analysis of the microbial communities associated with the fermentations used for the production of artisanal agave spirits in Mexico. Despite the biogeographic and cultural differences of the producing sites, we identified a core of bacteria and fungi that are common in most fermentations.

Microencapsulation of Agave cupreata Extract by Spray Drying: Physicochemical Properties and Antibacterial and Antiulcerogenic Activities. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Food Sci
The Agave cupreata leaves are the main crop residues generated by the mezcal industry. It is known that agave leaves are potential sources of antibacterial and anti‐inflammatory compounds that could be used in the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, the valorization of crop residues and maximal utilization of this material are of major research ...

Evidence for increasing global wheat yield potential [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Wheat is the most widely grown food crop, with 761 Mt produced globally in 2020. To meet the expected grain demand by mid-century, wheat breeding strategies must continue to improve upon yield-advancing physiological traits, regardless of climate change ...

Genomic analysis unveils reduced genetic variability but increased proportion of heterozygotic genotypes of the intensively managed mezcal agave, Agave angustifolia

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 110, Issue 8, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Premise The central Oaxaca Basin has a century‐long history of agave cultivation and is hypothesized to be the region of origin of other cultivated crops. Widely cultivated for mezcal production, the perennial crop known as “espadín” is putatively derived from wild Agave angustifolia.
