Epiphytism on benthic motile diatoms is not common and can be considered a phoretic habitat. Nitzschia sigmoidea is a very long diatom which often exhibits epiphytes on its frustule.

Bacillariophyceae u epifitonskim zajednicama ljutka

Tijekom 1997. i 1998. godine u NP Plitvička jezera, provedena su sustavna istraživanja alga kremenjašica u epifitonskim zajednicama na živim i uginulim stabljikama ljutka (Cladium mariscus Pohl.). Ukupno je determinirano 137 vrsta od kojih je 50% zajedničkih na oba tipa supstrata. Na živim stabljikama ljutka determinirano je 96, a na uginulim 111 vrsta.
