A Comparative Analysis of DNA Metabarcoding and Morphological Identification in Diatoms Reveals Similar Patterns of Environmental Response

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
This study compares the use of two universal molecular markers (COI and 18S rRNA) with morphological identification to evaluate patterns in diatom communities from high mountain mires. The results revealed a strong correspondence in beta diversity and environmental response across beta and alpha diversity. However, these molecular markers were found to

Environmental Risk Assessment and Anti‐Corrosion Efficacy of Safe‐by‐Design Nitrite‐Based Nanomaterials for Maritime Applications

open access: yesNano Select, Volume 7, Issue 2, February 2026.
The environmental behavior and impact of anti‐corrosion nanoadditives, ZnAl‐NO2 and MgAl‐NO2 layered double hydroxides (LDH), are assessed under marine conditions. These nanomaterials show instability in water but exhibit no or low toxicity to most tested marine species.

Diversity of FAAL enzymes and prediction of their substrate specificity using FAALPred

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract FAALs (fatty acyl‐AMP ligases) recruit and incorporate fatty acids during the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Their diversity, distribution, and substrate specificity remain poorly understood, which limits functional predictions from sequence data.

Relationship between the carbonate system and phytoplankton community in the Gulf of Guinea-Africa

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
We carried out measurements of the CO2 system parameters to evaluate the impact of carbonate and nutrients’ chemistry on phytoplankton populations in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).

Diversity and seasonal dynamics of the marine diatom family Chaetocerotaceae (Bacillariophyta, Mediophyceae) in Catalan coastal waters (northwest Mediterranean)

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 125-146, February 2026.
Abstract The family Chaetocerotaceae includes the genera Chaetoceros and Bacteriastrum, with Chaetoceros being one of the most cosmopolitan, abundant, and diverse diatom genera in the oceans. This study investigated the diversity and seasonal dynamics of the Chaetocerotaceae in surface waters of two coastal sites along the Catalan coast (Barcelona and ...

18S rDNA sequences from microeukaryotes reveal oil indicators in mangrove sediment. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
BackgroundMicroeukaryotes are an effective indicator of the presence of environmental contaminants. However, the characterisation of these organisms by conventional tools is often inefficient, and recent molecular studies have revealed a great diversity ...

eDNA Metabarcoding Reveals Microbial Community Composition in Tropical Mangrove Forests in Makassar, Indonesia

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding with 18S rRNA markers to assess microbial diversity in the Lantebung Mangrove Forest, Makassar, Indonesia. It identified 103 microbial species across five kingdoms, revealing higher species richness in open‐water areas (P1) and greater individual abundance under mangrove canopy (P2).

Unifying microorganisms and macrograzers in intertidal rocky shore ecological networks

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Over the past decades, our understanding of the vital role microbes play in ecosystem processes has greatly expanded. However, we still have limited knowledge about how microbial communities interact with larger organisms. Many existing representations of microbial interactions are based on co‐occurrence patterns, which do not provide clear ...
