Diatom diversity and distribution in Madeira Island streams (Portugal) [PDF]

open access: yesBiodiversity Data Journal, 2020
Here we present the data obtained from the samples collected in a field campaign during the spring of 2015 which aims for a better understanding of the diversity and distribution patterns of freshwater diatoms in Madeira Island.

Seasonal differences and potential biological drivers of the methane paradox in two peri‐Alpine lakes

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 3, May 2026.
Abstract Seasonal variations and the biological drivers underlying the methane paradox in freshwater lakes are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the relationship between subsurface methane inventories and phytoplankton in two peri‐Alpine lakes across different seasons.

Polyphyly and homoplasic structures in rhizosolenioid diatom genera: a review [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Ecology and Evolution, 2019
Background and aims – Traditionally, extant rhizosolenioid diatom genera have been placed in a single family, the Rhizosoleniaceae. However, preliminary molecular data suggested that the family might be polyphyletic. Therefore, a literature review of the

Comparison between fluorometry and microscopy‐based phytoplankton assessments in the Laurentian Great Lakes

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 24, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Photosynthetic pigment fluorescence is commonly used in limnology and oceanography as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass. Fluorometry has been used to detect subsurface algal blooms, characterize dynamics of the deep chlorophyll layer, and to provide greater vertical resolution to phytoplankton monitoring.

The nomenclature and type locality of Berkeleya adeliensis (Bacillariophyceae): a correction [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Ecology and Evolution, 2019
Background and aims – Berkeleya adeliensis was described in 1990 by Medlin, unfortunately with an error in its typification. This note discusses and corrects the error.Key results and conclusions – The type locality is in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, not ...

Alternative stable states: Evidence from natural ecosystems and implications for ecological restoration

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 2, April/June 2026.
Ecosystems can occupy alternative stable states, maintained by positive feedbacks and critical thresholds. Recovery is often nonlinear, making simple driver reversal insufficient. Effective restoration should target critical thresholds, disrupt degradation‐reinforcing feedbacks and strengthen recovery‐promoting feedbacks.
