Exploiting Native Biodiversity for Invasive Species Management: The Case of Exorista larvarum as a Natural Enemy of the Invasive Box Tree Moth Cydalima perspectalis

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
The investigations evaluated the performance of the native parasitoid Exorista larvarum (L.) on last instar Cydalima perspectalis (Walker) larvae, using the factitious host Galleria mellonella (L.) as a control. Laboratory bioassays were conducted using no‐choice and choice (1:1 and 5:5) experimental designs.

Equine vegetative endocarditis and vertebral osteomyelitis due to refractory Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was the causative agent of vegetative endocarditis and vertebral osteomyelitis in a 24‐year‐old Irish draught gelding that presented with prolonged history of intermittent pyrexia and tachycardia. Clinical investigations revealed persistently reduced neck mobility, tachydysrhythmia and episodic pyrexia up to 41°C ...

Cryo‐EM structure of GH43 β‐Xylosidase from Enterobacter cloacae provides insights into substrate specificity and the role of an auxiliary domain in enzymatic activity

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Xylan, the second most abundant plant cell wall polysaccharide, is degraded by β‐xylanases and β‐xylosidases. Here, we present the 2.65 Å cryo‐EM structure of Enterobacter cloacae β‐xylosidase (EcXyl43, GH43) and the 2.4 Å X‐ray structure of its inactive F507A mutant.

Hydrothermal origin of metabolic phosphorylation

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Serpentinizing hydrothermal vents are candidate sites for biochemical origins. They generate extremely reducing conditions, depositing phosphite (HPO32−) and transition metals, including palladium, in the native (zero‐valent) state. Schlikker et al.

Lignan‐rich Norway spruce (Picea abies) resin extract exhibits anti‐inflammatory, skin‐regenerative and anti‐acne effects: In vitro, in silico, biocompatibility and exploratory clinical findings

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cosmetic Science, EarlyView.
GA text A 30% Picea abies resin extract cream combined antimicrobial, anti‐inflammatory and early pro‐repair activities relevant to acne‐prone skin. The formulation showed strong activity against Cutibacterium acnes, reduced inflammatory cytokines and demonstrated promising tolerability and efficacy in an exploratory in‐use study. Abstract Objective To

From biology to biotechnology: Host‐regulation factors from parasitoid wasps are a source of bioactive molecules with translational potential

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Parasitoid wasps deploy maternal and embryonic factors to reprogramme host physiology. Venom, calyx fluid, polydnaviruses, teratocytes and larval secretions act in a coordinated, compartmentalised manner. Host‐regulation factors are promising sources of insecticidal, antimicrobial and bioinspired translational molecules.
