Stochastic Samples versus Vacuum Expectation Values in Cosmology

open access: yes, 2010
Particle theorists typically use expectation values to study the quantum back-reaction on inflation, whereas many cosmologists stress the stochastic nature of the process.

Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

Forest Die-Back Modified Plankton Recovery from Acidic Stress [PDF]

open access: yesAMBIO, 2013
We examined long-term data on water chemistry of Lake Rachelsee (Germany) following the changes in acidic depositions in central Europe since 1980s. Despite gradual chemical recovery of Rachelsee, its biological recovery was delayed. In 1999, lake recovery was abruptly reversed by a coincident forest die-back, which resulted in elevated terrestrial ...

Plasticity-Induced Anisotropy in Amorphous Solids: the Bauschinger Effect

open access: yes, 2010
Amorphous solids that underwent a strain in one direction such that they responded in a plastic manner `remember' that direction also when relaxed back to a state with zero mean stress.

Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...

Longitudinal study of housing for the promotion of health and well‐being using a covariance structure model to identify the causal relationships between satisfaction with living environment, stress, and chronic low back pain

open access: yesJapan Architectural Review, 2018
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the causal relationship between certain factors through longitudinal research on health and living environment.

Montmorency cherries reduce the oxidative stress and inflammatory responses to repeated days high-intensity stochastic cycling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This investigation examined the impact of Montmorency tart cherry concentrate (MC) on physiological indices of oxidative stress, inflammation and muscle damage across 3 days simulated road cycle racing.

The role of histone modifications in transcription regulation upon DNA damage

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review discusses the critical role of histone modifications in regulating gene expression during the DNA damage response (DDR). By modulating chromatin structure and recruiting repair factors, these post‐translational modifications fine‐tune transcriptional programmes to maintain genomic stability.

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Clinical Sports Medicine & Orthopedics

open access: yesDeutsche Zeitschrift für Sportmedizin, 2022
Nonspecific lower back and buttock pain can significantly limit performance in athletes and can be of different origins. Sacral stress fractures are a rare and, in many cases, undiagnosed cause of lower back pain, which can lead to a substantial loss of ...
