Effect ofBackebergia militaris cactus extract on intestinal smooth muscle contractility

The branches of the giant cactus Backebergia militaris contain at least one biologically active compound, corresponding to an alkaloid. This activity was not dependent on cactus age. Methanol crude extracts of B. militaris showed a clear inhibitory effect on rabbit intestinal smooth muscle contractility.
