Synthetic Aperture Radar Monitoring of Snow in a Reindeer-Grazing Landscape

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Snow cover and runoff play an important role in the Arctic environment, which is increasingly affected by climate change. Over the past 30 years, winter temperatures in northern Sweden have risen by 2 °C, accompanied by an increase in precipitation. This

Multispectral Multibeam Echo Sounder Backscatter as a Tool for Improved Seafloor Characterization

open access: yesGeosciences, 2019
The establishment of multibeam echosounders (MBES), as a mainstream tool in ocean mapping, has facilitated integrative approaches towards nautical charting, benthic habitat mapping, and seafloor geotechnical surveys. The combined acoustic response of the

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Interaction of MgO Recyclate‐Based Cermet Anode With KF‐AlF3‐Al2O3 at 800°C During Laboratory Scale Aluminum Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A carbon‐free, as‐sintered MgO–steel cermet anode, fabricated via cold isostatic pressing using MgO–C refractory recyclate, was evaluated under laboratory‐scale K‐cryolite electrolysis at 800°C. Operation at this reduced temperature, combined with the electrolyte's limited electrical conductivity, led to an increase in cell voltage.

The Intertwined Factors Affecting Altimeter Sigma0

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Radar altimeters receive radio-wave reflections from nadir and determine surface parameters from the strength and shape of the return signal. Over the oceans, the strength of the return, termed sigma0 (σ0), is strongly related to the small-scale ...

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Understanding the stability of the ECOPuck optical sensor: evaluation of long-term ocean glider data streams across decades

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Over 16 years, Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) Ocean Glider program has collected high-resolution optical sensor data (scatter, chlorophyll-a (Chl)) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) fluorescence) across 400+ missions ...

Development of Sustainable MgO–C Refractories Using MgO–C Recyclates and a Novel Eco‐Friendly Fructose–Tannin Binder Crosslinked With Citric Acid

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study develops sustainable MgO–C refractories using recycled materials and eco‐friendly fructose–tannin binders. The enhanced performance of citric acid as a cross‐linker and functional additives on mechanical and thermomechanical properties was examined. Characterization included strength tests, immersion trials, and microstructural and inclusion

Impact of Sparse Benthic Life on Seafloor Roughness and High-Frequency Acoustic Scatter

open access: yesGeosciences, 2019
Quantitative acoustic marine habitat mapping needs to consider the impact of macrobenthic organisms on backscatter data. However, the sensitivity of hydroacoustic systems to epibenthic life is poorly constrained.
