Testing A Personalized Approach to Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Older Veterans

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective We aimed to test the efficacy of personalized treatment of older Veterans with chronic low back pain (CLBP) delivered by Aging Back Clinics (ABC) as compared with usual care (UC). Methods Two hundred ninety‐nine Veterans age 65‐89 with CLBP from 3 VA medical centers underwent baseline testing, randomization to ABC or UC and 12 months follow ...

Sustained, not habituated, activity in the human amygdala: A pilot fMRI dot-probe study of attentional bias to fearful faces

open access: yesCogent Psychology, 2016
The human amygdala consciously and nonconsciously processes facial expressions and directs spatial attention to them. Research has shown that amygdala activity habituates after repeated exposure to emotionally salient stimuli during passive viewing tasks.

Unconscious Processing of Facial Expressions in Individuals with Internet Gaming Disorder

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2017
Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is characterized by impairments in social communication and the avoidance of social contact. Facial expression processing is the basis of social communication. However, few studies have investigated how individuals with IGD

Experimental Study on the Snowfall Flow Control of Backward-Facing Steps Using a High-Durability Designed Plasma Electrode

open access: yesActuators, 2022
Using a high-durability designed plasma electrode (PA), the plasma actuation effect on both a two-dimensional backward-facing step flow (standard model) and an arc-shaped three-dimensional backward-facing step flow (arc model) was investigated ...

Deep Contextualized Acoustic Representations For Semi-Supervised Speech Recognition

open access: yes, 2020
We propose a novel approach to semi-supervised automatic speech recognition (ASR). We first exploit a large amount of unlabeled audio data via representation learning, where we reconstruct a temporal slice of filterbank features from past and future ...

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

Neural Computations Underlying Phenomenal Consciousness: A Higher Order Syntactic Thought Theory

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2020
Problems are raised with the global workspace hypothesis of consciousness, for example about exactly how global the workspace needs to be for consciousness to suddenly be present.

Quantum Emitters in Hexagonal Boron Nitride: Principles, Engineering and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride have emerged as a promising candidate for quantum information science. This review examines the fundamentals of these quantum emitters, including their level structures, defect engineering, and their possible chemical structures.
