Visualization of the Bacterial Polysaccharide Capsule

1990
The highly hydrated capsule of E. coli strains is composed of a large number of polysaccharide fibers of which the thinnest measure about 2 nm in width. The fibers may span the entire distance from the outer membrane to the outer rim of the capsule and show a propensity to associate with each other to form thicker filaments. Presence of thick filaments

Cultivation of bacterial with ecological capsules in space

Advances in Space Research, 1999
Abstract A hermetically materially-closed aquatic microcosm containing bacteria, algae, and invertebrates was developed as a tool for determining the changes of ecological systems in space. The species composition was maintained for more than 365 days. The microcosm could be readily replicated.

The Role of Bacterial Polysaccharide Capsules as Virulence Factors

1990
Carbohydrates are universally present on the surface of living cells. On eukaryotic cells, many different carbohydrates are attached as glycoproteins and glycolipids; the oligosaccharide moieties are known to act as receptors and it seems likely that they play an important role in cell-to-cell recognition processes.

Hydrophobic Engineering of a Bacterial Nanodimensional Capsule Protein

2020
Recently, numerous protein-based nanomedicine platforms have been intensively explored. These systems are usually composed of self-assembling proteins that form controllable systems with different shapes and types. A particular type of the self-assembling proteins is the cage protein bacterioferritin (Bfr), a hollow protein that belongs to the ferritin

Complex structure of the bacterial capsule in the genus bacillus

Experientia, 1951
