Nitrogen sorption as a tool for the characterisation of polysaccharide aerogels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Supercritically dried aerogels of several polysaccharides (chitin, chitosan, alginate, alginic acid, k- carrageenan, and agar) have been characterised by physisorption ofN2. Surface areas as high as 570m2 g−1 have been measured.

Host‐Directed Biomaterials for Combatting Bloodstream Infections: From Macrocyclic Peptides to Immune‐Activating Cell Backpacks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bloodstream infections (BSI) are one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in both civilian and military populations. This paper summarizes recent progress in novel treatment strategies to manage BSI arising from both bacterial and fungal pathogens using molecules, particles, and materials to elicit host‐directed immunity.

Translating bacteriophage-derived depolymerases into antibacterial therapeutics: Challenges and prospects

open access: yesActa Pharmaceutica Sinica B
Predatory bacteriophages have evolved a vast array of depolymerases for bacteria capture and deprotection. These depolymerases are enzymes responsible for degrading diverse bacterial surface carbohydrates.

Metal Coated Colloidosomes as Carriers for an Antibiotic

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemistry, 2018
Colloidosomes are polymer shell microcapsules. They are stable and easy to prepare and have been used to encapsulate drugs for release at specific areas in the body. Traditional polymer shell capsules cannot totally seal drugs, since they are porous, and

Long-term impact of fecal transplantation in healthy volunteers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been recently approved by FDA for the treatment of refractory recurrent clostridial colitis (rCDI). Success of FTM in treatment of rCDI led to a number of studies investigating the effectiveness of its ...

A New Method for Staining Bacterial Capsules.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1932
A simple method is described by which a capsule-like structure is readily demonstrated about many bacteria. It is selectively stained pink, in contrast to the blue bacterial bodies. Use is made only of stain and fixative. No artificial steps, like preliminary treatment with serum, etc., designed to render the capsule more readily demonstrable, are ...

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Bio-UHPC: analysis of the addition of alginate-sodium capsules with Lysinibacillus sphaericus in ultra-high-performance concrete [PDF]

open access: yesRevista IBRACON de Estruturas e Materiais
Cracks in concrete compromise its mechanical strength and expose its interior, making it more susceptible to the external environment. Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) is also susceptible to this situation.

Protection of dried probiotic bacteria from bile using bile adsorbent resins [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Enteric coated oral tablets or capsules can deliver dried live cells directly into the intestine. Previously, we found that a live attenuated bacterial vaccine acquired sensitivity to intestinal bile when dried, raising the possibility that although ...
