Tailoring the Properties of Functional Materials With N‐Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The properties of materials bearing N‐oxide groups are often dominated by the polar N+─O− bond. It provides hydrophilicity, selective ion‐binding, electric conductivity, or antifouling properties. Many of the underlying mechanisms have only recently been discovered, and the interest in N‐oxide materials is rapidly growing.

Encapsulation and subsequent freeze-drying of Lactobacillus reuteri CRL 1324 for its potential inclusion in vaginal probiotic formulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Probiotic formulations must include a high number of viable and active microorganisms. In this work, the survival of human vaginal Lactobacillus reuteri CRL 1324 during encapsulation, lyophilization and storage, and the activity of encapsulated and/or ...

A Single‐Metal‐Doped Nanoplatform for Ferroptosis‐Driven cGAS‐STING Pathway Activation in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Immunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The cGAS‐STING pathway boosts HCC antitumor immunity but lacks specific activation. Nanoplatform ZMRPF induces HCC ferroptosis via lipid ROS, releasing mtDNA. It synergizes with ZMRPF‐released Mn2⁺ to activate cGAS‐STING, amplifies antigen‐presenting cell activity, reverses HCC immunosuppression, and enables robust systemic antitumor immunity ...

Bacterial biofilm associated with a case of capsular contracture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Capsular contracture is one of the most common complications of implant-based breast augmentation. Despite its prevalence, the etiology of capsular contracture remains controversial although the surface texture of the breast implant, the anatomical ...

Adhesion of coagulase-negative staphylococci to methacrylate polymers and copolymers [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Adhesion of coagulasef-negative staphylococci (CNS) was studied onto a homologous series of methacrylate polymers and copolymers. The materials varied in wettability (contact angles) and were either positively or negatively charged (zetapotential ...

Diversity and function of phage encoded depolymerases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Bacteriophages of the Podoviridae family often exhibit so-called depolymerases as structural components of the virion. These enzymes appear as tail spike proteins (TSPs).

Living Liquid Metal Composites Embedded with Electrogenic Endospores for Next‐Generation Bioelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A new class of living liquid metal composites is introduced, embedding Bacillus subtilis endospores into eutectic gallium–indium (EGaIn). The spores enhance droplet coalescence, strengthen interfacial conductivity, and provide on‐demand electrogenic functionality after germination. The composites exhibit high conductivity, self‐healing, patternability,

The shock compression of microorganism-loaded broths and emulsions: Experiments and simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
By carefully selecting flyer plate thickness and the geometry of a target capsule for bacterial broths and emulsions, we have successfully subjected the contents of the capsule to simultaneous shock and dynamic compression when subjected to a flyer ...
