Bacterial cellulose and bacterial cellulose–chitosan membranes for wound dressing applications

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2013
Bacterial cellulose (BC) and bacterial cellulose-chitosan (BC-Ch) membranes were successfully produced in large scale. BC was synthesized by Acetobacter xylinum. BC-Ch was prepared by immersing BC in chitosan followed by freeze-drying. The surface morphology of BC and BC-Ch membranes were examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Bacterial cellulose

2004
A strain of Acetobacter xylinum was isolated from the New Zealand environment. The characteristics affecting cellulose production by A. xylinum were investigated and compared to previously isolated strains. The effect of various environmental parameters on the mechanical strength and water holding capacity of the bacterial cellulose was also ...

Designing with bacterial cellulose

Proceedings of the FabLearn 2020 - 9th Annual Conference on Maker Education, 2020
One of the main challenges for Plan Ceibal makerspace program (Ceilab) is the search of new investigation lines applied to the national education system in Uruguay. This paper presents the results of educational and maker experiences across the search of new sustainable materials based on bacterial cellulose production.

Bacterial Cellulose Scaffolds and Cellulose Nanowhiskers for Tissue Engineering

Nanomedicine, 2013
As the principle structural polysaccharide in plants, cellulose has been extensively characterized over many decades. In recent years, however, exciting new cellulosic materials have been developed with nanoscale fibrillar structures that have particularly promising applications in the growing field of tissue engineering. The majority of recent studies

Bacterial Cellulose Nanocomposites

2019
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biopolymer with high purity of cellulose and excellent mechanical properties. Increased interest in the use of natural polymer makes BC as an excellent alternative for plant cellulose. Although both celluloses consist of unbranched pellicle with chemically equivalent structure, bacterial cellulose exhibits greater ...

Polyhydroxybutyrate-Based Nanocomposites with Cellulose Nanocrystals and Bacterial Cellulose

Journal of Polymers and the Environment, 2016
Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) films nanoreinforced with hydrolyzed cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and bacterial cellulose (BC) were prepared by solvent casting. The influence of different cellulose nanoparticles content (2, 4 and 6 wt% of CNC and 2 wt% of BC) on the PHB properties was studied. CNC nanocomposites presented good dispersion of the nanocrystals,
