The Cytology of Bacterial Conjugation

EcoSal Plus, 2004
This review focuses on the membrane-associated structures present at cell-cell contact sites during bacterial conjugation. These transfer proteins/structures have roles in the formation and stabilization of mating contacts and ultimately the passage of substrate across the cell envelope between two bacterial cells.

Crosstalk between bacterial conjugation and motility is mediated by plasmid-borne regulators.

Environmental Microbiology Reports, 2019
Plasmid conjugation is a major horizontal gene transfer mechanism. The acquisition of a plasmid may cause a perturbation of the cell functions in addition to provide advantageous properties for the recipient cell, such as the gaining of antibiotic ...

DNA PROCESSING REACTIONS IN BACTERIAL CONJUGATION

Annual Review of Biochemistry, 1995
Bacterial conjugation is an important source of genetic plasticity. The initiation complex for conjugative transfer of transmissible plasmids—the relaxosome—is a specific DNA-protein structure that has been isolated from cells and reconstituted from purified components in vitro.

Bacterial conjugation: everybody's doin' it

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1992
Recent evidence suggests that bacterial conjugation is ubiquitous in the bacterial world and that DNA transfer between different genera–kingdoms is possible. It has also been demonstrated that many bacterial gene transfer systems resemble each other at the molecular level and that others are a blend of two or more of these systems.

Nanoparticle-drug conjugates treating bacterial infections

Journal of Controlled Release, 2019
The ever increasing scenario of bacterial resistance against commonly available antibiotics is becoming a global threat of major concern, which necessitates the development of new strategies to overcome this hurdle. Conjugation of nanoparticles (NPs) with antimicrobial moieties, such as antibiotics, peptides or different biomolecules, has been one of ...

Anti-bacterial siderophore-aminopenicillin conjugates

2023
An artificial tris-catecolate siderophore with a tripodal backbone and its conjugates with ampicillin and amoxicillin were synthesized. Both conjugates exhibited significantly enhanced in vitro antibacterial activities against Gram-negative species compared to the parent drugs, especially against P. aeruginosa.

Conjugation between bacterial and mammalian cells

Nature Genetics, 2001
Bacterial conjugation, in which DNA is transferred from one bacterium to another, was first reported in 1946 and found to be mediated by the F factor. Although the F and RK2/RP4 prototypic plasmids can mediate the transfer of DNA from bacteria to yeast, there has been no evidence of classical bacterial conjugation to higher eukaryotes.

Immunization of newborns with bacterial conjugate vaccines

Vaccine, 2013
Bacterial conjugate vaccines are based on the principle of coupling immunogenic bacterial capsular polysaccharides to a carrier protein to facilitate the induction of memory T-cell responses. Following the success of Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccines in the 1980s, conjugate vaccines for Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis

[Bacterial conjugative transposons].

Genetika, 1998
Data on conjugative transposons of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are reviewed. Their organization and the mechanism of their transposition and mobilization of other replicons are considered. The transposition regulation by tetracycline and the role of conjugative transposons in bacterial gene transfer are briefly discussed.
