Distribution of the bacterial symbiont Cardinium in arthropods

Molecular Ecology, 2004
Abstract‘Candidatus Cardinium’, a recently described bacterium from the Bacteroidetes group, is involved in diverse reproduction alterations of its arthropod hosts, including cytoplasmic incompatibility, parthenogenesis and feminization. To estimate the incidence rate of Cardinium and explore the limits of its host range, 99 insect and mite species ...

Bacterial Symbionts of Corals and Symbiodinium

2011
Multipartite symbiosis in corals is an exciting area of research that is not well studied. Research to date indicates that bacterial associates of corals may protect the host by producing antibiotics and other beneficial compounds and nutrients, and are likely to play a role in the stability of the coral animal as a whole.

From bacterial symbiont physiology to symbiont chromosome organization

According to recent estimates, 10^25 prokaryotes live in association with animals. However, as of now, the growth and division of only a handful of animal symbionts has been researched in molecular detail. This thesis focuses on cell shape, reproductive strategies, and chromosome organization of non-model bacteria attached to animal surfaces.

Bacterial symbionts in Anopheles spp. and other mosquito vectors

2008
Mosquito-borne diseases (malaria, filariasis, dengue, chikungunya, etc.) represent dramatic health problems, mainly in developing countries where these diseases are endemic. Different integrated approaches have been aimed at both vector control and disease control, the most popular represented by the application of DDT and other insecticides ...

Characterisation of bacterial symbionts in amoebae

2006
Thesis (PhDAppliedScience)--University of South Australia, 2006. This thesis attempts to broaden what is known about bacterial symbionts within amoebae by the use of a number of different molecular methods. Initially a number of different amoeba strains were screened for bacterial symbionts by 16S rRNA gene PCR, then the symbionts were identified by ...

Bacterial Symbionts of Entomopathogenic Nematodes

Around 1974, I started bacteriological studies on the microbiota of EPNs, following the request of my colleague nematologist C. Laumond (INRA Antibes France). I contacted people concerned by this subject that were at this stage the pioneers of the subject, the Prof.
