Two new mayfly species (Baetidae) from India

Two new mayfly species belonging to the family Baetidae, namely Platybaetis arunachalae sp. nov. and Indobaetis michaelohubbardi sp. nov., are described from nymphs collected in the Ramanadi and Tamiraparani rivers, respectively, of the southern Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu, India.

Two species of Baetidae mayfly family are described as new. Male imago of Baetis oreophilus sp. nov. is characterized by elongated forcepses of last joint; its n y m p h IS similar to B. rhodani, with two hairs on each claw and spines on front and hind mar- gins of the gills. Male imago of B. stipposus sp. nov.

The life history of Cloeon cognatum Stephens is described. Details are given on gill regeneration and light-intensity induced metamorphosis. The role of ocelli as possible mediators of metamorphosis is discussed. The function of the subimago is examined.
