Developing ocean literacy through a relational model: Exploring outcomes of a place‐based ocean education programme in primary schools

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Schools are a common place where the younger generation can develop their understanding of the ocean and acquire the skills needed to become responsible and knowledgeable ocean advocates. Grounded in a relational ocean literacy model, this study examined outcomes of a place‐based programme integrating picture books, beach excursions and ...

On the Origins of Out‐of‐Plane Auxetic Response in Paper

open access: yesphysica status solidi (b), EarlyView.
Paper can be auxetic! Paper can exhibit a range of out‐of‐plane Poisson's ratio (PR) values. Examining handsheets made from hardwood (HW) and softwood (SW) fibers, of a variety of weights (1, 3, or 5 g) and refining degrees (none, R, or R+), showed that the sign and magnitude of PR can be finely controlled by modifying network parameters.

Tunable Ce‐Doping Engineering in TiFe‐Based Alloys for High‐Activation and High‐Durability Hydrogen Storage

open access: yesRare Metals, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT TiFe‐based hydrogen storage alloys have garnered significant attention because of their cost‐effectiveness, high hydrogen capacity, and favorable hydrogen absorption/desorption characteristics. However, practical application was limited by activation challenges and sensitivity to environmental poisoning.

Comparing convolutional neural network and random forest for benthic habitat mapping in Apollo Marine Park

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
A comparison of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Random Forest (RF) model predictions of benthic habitats within Apollo Marine Park. The CNN (left) and RF (right) classification maps show the spatial distribution of three habitat types: high energy circalittoral rock with seabed‐covering sponges, low complexity circalittoral rock with non‐crowded

Sliding Doors: Frame Uptake and Rejection by Learners in a Museum‐Based Climate Learning Experience

open access: yesScience Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Science education efforts that support public understanding of modern climate change are critically needed. However, implementing climate‐related learning experiences can be challenging, as public audiences tend to experience a wide range of understandings of and emotions around the issue. In light of these challenges, many scholars have posed
