Role of HXXXD-motif/BAHD acyltransferases in the biosynthesis of extracellular lipids

Plant Cell Reports, 2014
Terrestrial plants have evolved specific adaptations to preserve water and protect themselves from their environment. Such adaptations range from secondary metabolites and specialized structures that conduct water and nutrients, to cell wall modifications (i.e., cuticle and suberin) that prevent dehydration and provide a physical barrier to pathogens ...

A BAHD acyltransferase is expressed in the tapetum of Arabidopsis anthers and is involved in the synthesis of hydroxycinnamoyl spermidines [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Journal, 2009
SummaryBAHD acyltransferases catalyze the acylation of many plant secondary metabolites. We characterized the function of At2g19070, a member of the BAHD gene family of Arabidopsis thaliana. The acyltransferase gene was shown to be specifically expressed in anther tapetum cells in the early stages of flower development.

Rosmarinic acid synthase is a new member of the superfamily of BAHD acyltransferases

Planta, 2006
Purification of rosmarinic acid synthase (hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA:hydroxyphenyllactate hydroxycinnamoyltransferase) from suspension cells of Coleus blumei Benth. (Lamiaceae) by fractionated ammonium sulphate precipitation, hydrophobic interaction chromatography and two affinity chromatography steps led to the identification of peptide sequences, which ...

Acyltransferases in plants: a good time to be BAHD

Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2006
Acylation is a common and biochemically significant modification of plant secondary metabolites. Plant BAHD acyltransferases constitute a large family of acyl CoA-utilizing enzymes whose products include small volatile esters, modified anthocyanins, as well as constitutive defense compounds and phytoalexins.

Functional characterization and catalytic activity improvement of BAHD acyltransferase from Celastrus angulatus Maxim

Planta, 2020
A BAHD terpene alcohol acyltransferase, CaAT20, was identified from Celastrus angulatus Maxim, expressed in E. coli and functionally characterized. S405A mutant of CaAT20 increased the enzyme activity. Acylation is a diversely physiological process in the biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites. Plant BAHD acyltransferases play an important role in

BAHD superfamily of acyl-CoA dependent acyltransferases in Populus and Arabidopsis: bioinformatics and gene expression

Plant Molecular Biology, 2009
Plant acyl-CoA dependent acyltransferases constitute a large specific protein superfamily, named BAHD. Using the conserved sequence motifs of BAHD members, we searched the genome sequences of Populus and Arabidopsis, and identified, respectively, 94- and 61-putative genes.

Evolution of Acyltransferase Genes: Origin and Diversification of the BAHD Superfamily of Acyltransferases Involved in Secondary Metabolism

2000
Enzymatic acylation is a widespread substitution reaction that is notably involved in the diversification of natural substances produced by plant secondary metabolism. Acylation may also trigger nonenzyme-catalyzed reactions in natural product biosynthesis.
