Deep structure and origin of the Baikal rift zone

P-wave velocity images are determined under the Baikal rift zone in Siberia by using teleseismic tomography. Our results show prominent low-velocity anomalies in the upper mantle under the Baikal rift zone and high-velocity anomalies in the lithosphere under the Siberian craton.

Fractals in studies of faulting and seismicity in the Baikal rift zone

Abstract Fractal analyses have been carried out for spatial patterns of faulting including over 3000 faults and seismicity of more than 60,000 earthquakes in the Baikal rift zone (BRZ). It is concluded that faulting and seismicity are in balance in the whole BRZ and out of balance in its flanks.
